The Newington Forest Swim Team (NFST INC) is a non-profit 501-(c)3 community based athletic organization. NFST INC is a member of the Northern Virginia Swim League (NVSL), the largest summer swim league in the United States.
The team comprises strictly of homeowners and renters of the Newington Forest Community Association. The program is broken into two parts.
- The first is the Neptunes swim team consisting of youth from ages six to eighteen. They compete in the NVSL A league swim meets and league division events. The team also participates in the Springfield-Burke developmental league against surrounding pools not in our current swim division.
- The second part of the team is our Mini-Neptune program. The Mini-Neptunes are children at least four years of age until seven years of age. This program is our developmental program that teaches youngsters how to swim through close adult coaching and teen swimming mentors to assist. The goal is to graduate the Mini swimmer to the competition team.
The Neptunes swim team promotes sportsmanship and a positive team environment. Our philosophy is to teach our youth respect for each other, other competitors, and their parents. We measure our success in different ways; the team win-loss, individual standings amongst the other swimmers of that age group in our division, and swimming improvement.
Parents volunteer numerous hours to create a healthy environment that encourages the kids to do their best, recognizes their contributions, and is fun for the entire family. Counter to other youth sports, it takes an army of parents to make a swim season a success. Communication between parents, board members and coaches is vital to our success. Parents are highly encouraged to communicate their opinions and observations so we can always improve the team and environment that we compete in.
Many of our community youth have used the successes on the team and carried the life skills learned to future adult success. We are a small team with big hearts.
